Eminently-quotable Susan Sarandon has volunteered to move to Italy (or Canada) should John McCain be elected. I say, why wait until November? Please move—and take Tim with you. Liz Smith adds that La Sarandon shows no love for Condi Rice, and in her own words, “I hated Margaret Thatcher.” Margaret Thatcher, the woman who single-handedly made Britain relevant again. Okay. Margaret Thatcher, whose country Susan does not live in. Hated. Hmmmmm. Margaret Thatcher who has nothing to do with anything currently. Never mind…
.
When G.W. Bush was re-elected, numbers of notables threatened to leave the country for Canada. Right. Canada. That Canada. Much of that bizarre tendency was based, at least putatively, on the (flawed) premise that GWB had stolen the election somehow. I don’t believe this to be her insinuation in the instance of John McCain. In the current discussion, Sarandon may leave the country simply because her party isn’t elected. This reeks merely of bad sportsmanship, not conviction.
.
Let’s be realistic, take a deep breath, and note that this threat rings extremely hollow because the Sarandon-Robbins household is possessed of (1) much money and (b) even more leisure. They may already have a house in Italy (or Canada) and “moving there” means…well…it means almost nothing. They may already live there.
.
Vis-à-vis Italy, I wonder if La Sarandon is aware that the country is currently governed by Silvio Berlusconi (and has been twice before), 51st richest dude on the planet, and the richest in Italia? Essentially a cross between George W. and Rupert Murdoch. Only more so. Don’t like John McCain, but Silvio’s A-OK. Well, nobody said you had to be consistent—or intelligent—to be a starlet. In fact…
.
And furthermore, perhaps it has escaped La Sarandon’s memory that Italy was an actual fascist country, with all the trappings, including stuffing Jews into trains headed northeast. You know how that turned out. I realize that among the Sarandon-Robbins set, “fascist” simply means, “I disagree with you,” but please.
.
Be of good cheer: we may not have to worry. As long as Obama wins the Presidency, the U.S. is good enough for Sarandon. And this could happen. But again I ask, why take that chance? Please leave now.
